Can I Get a Witness? You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 Christ’s words at the beginning of the book of Acts echoes his words at the end of the Gospel according to Luke – WE are Christ’s witnesses. The rest of the book of Acts is the story of the witness of the earliest Christians as they spread the gospel – the good news – through thought, word, and deed. From the earliest days of Methodism, witnessing was considered an integral part of the laity’s role. At times, though, we can lose sight of this part of being a Christian. We can collapse Christianity into a moral code that simply says “be a good person” or “be a good citizen.” The general conference of the United Methodist Church wants to make sure that Methodists all over the world – yes, even in Athens, Texas –remember that we are called to be Christ’s witnesses here and now. To that end, the general conference approved last month a change to our membership vows. Now, when joining the church, people will be asked to support the church with their “prayers, presence, gifts, services, and witness.” I’m really looking forward to this constant reminder of our role as Christ’s witnesses, and the call to live out that witness in and through our actions and words. God bless, Jack Matkin Welcome New Members
